The protesters, including political activists and some NGOs, claimed that livelihood of hundreds of people was affected due to the order and government should immediately take measures and appeal against the order, Vasu, coordinator of the 'People's Protection Committee', said.

"The people of Gudalur, Pandalur, Masinagudi and nearby villages coming under Mudumalai Tiger Reserve are affected by the order," he said.

Besides, the agitation was also aimed at seeking pattas (deeds) for the 'Janmam' land (land reportedly given by the British), which the people were using and living in for more than 50 years.

Earlier 1,500 people staged a protest in front of Taluk Office in Gudalur.

Vasu said that if there was no response from the government, the committee would organise a bandh in the area on September 11.

Stepping in to conserve the big cat, the Supreme Court had last month directed that there shall be no tourism activity in any of the core zones of tiger reserves across the country.
