The first sunstroke death in Odisha this summer took place today as most parts of the state sizzled in the intense heat with the mercury hovering above 40 degrees celsius in atleast ten places.
Announcing the first heat casualty in the state, Deputy Special Relief Commissioner Prabhat Mohapatra said one man died due to sunstroke in Bargarh district of western Odisha.
He said there have been reports of 13 sunstroke deaths from nine districts so far and detailed reports on them were awaited.
Malkangiri in southern Odisha was the hottest place in the state at 42.8 degrees celsius. Western Odisha experienced blistering heat with Balangir recording 41.7 degrees, followed by Titlagarh at 41.5 degrees Celsius and Angul at 41.1 degrees Celsius, the MeT office said.
While Talcher town registered its maximum at 40.8 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature was 40.4 degrees Celsius at Jharsuguda, 40.3 degrees Celsius at Hirakud, 40.1 degrees Celsius at Sambalpur and 40 degrees at Celsius Sundargarh, it said.
The heat increased in coastal area too and the maximum temperature in Bhubaneswar soared to 40.6 degrees compared to 37.5 degree celsius yesterday. The mercury rose to 38.8 degrees from 36.8 degrees in neighbouring Cuttack city, it said.
Meanwhile, the Met office predicted the likelihood of a low pessure over Bay of Bengal on April 14 or April 15, which could bring some respite from the heat.
