One held for duping man of Rs 16 lakh

A man was today arrested from Rajasthan for allegedly cheating a male teacher here of Rs 16 lakh on the pretext of marriage, police said.

According to police, the arrested accused Avadesh L along with his brother and sister-in-law uploaded a photo of a woman (claiming that she was an HIV patient) on a matrimonial website dedicated to HIV patients seeking prospective grooms.

The victim, who is an HIV patient, after seeing the photo of the woman, on the website called up the number and spoke to one lady and both of them agreed to marry.

"The woman reportedly told the teacher that she has Rs 2 lakh and after marriage she wants to settle down in Delhi. Accordingly, the victim also told her that he has a house in Hyderabad and he will arrange the remaining amount by selling the same," a police officer attached to Central Crime Station, a wing of Hyderabad Police said.
 

On the pretext of marriage and settling down in Delhi, the accused, including the woman, managed to fleece Rs 16 lakh from the teacher in installments over the past six months.

"However, in the last one month, the woman's phone went 'switched off', after which the teacher grew suspicious and complained to the CCS. During the course of investigation, Avadesh was arrested and efforts are on to nab his brother and sister-in-law," the police officer said.
