A man sustained a bullet injury during a clash here between railway passengers and kanwariyas after the latter allegedly boarded the reserved coaches of a train, police said today.

An FIR has been lodged against 50 unknown persons by the Railway Police, they said.

"Last night a number of kanwariyas returning after offering holy water on the occasion of Mahashivratri boarded the Avadh Express (coming from Gorakhpur) from near Baranbaki district. They (kanwariyas) tried to take the reserved coaches which resulted in the clash," Railway Police (GRP) Circle officer DSP Surendra Tiwari said.

"At about 2:45 am last night, when the train reached Kanpur Central station, the passengers and kanwariyas confronted each other and came to blows," Tiwari said.

A passenger inside the train fired which hit a kanwariya Chandraprakash (24), a resident of Ajitmal Auraiya, in the abdomen, wounding him grievously, he said.

The irate kanwariyas then vent their anger and resorted to vandalism at the railway station. The situation was brought under control with some difficulty by senior officials, they said.

Chandraprakash has been taken to a hospital and the police is investigating the case, Tiwari said.

"A case has been registered against 50 unknown persons. No arrests have been made so far," he said.
