The incident occurred at about 6.30 pm near Dacca Patty Masjid area of Nagaon.
Two motorcycle borne men came up to Amit Das when he was leaving his business establishment with the day's collection of cash.
The two tried to snatch Das' bag containing the money. When he resisted they shot him and fled without taking the bag, the sources said.
Das was admitted to BP Civil Hospital in a critical condition. He was later referred to the Guwahati Medical College.
