The villagers had held two thieves inside a room at the village yesterday, police said.
When the information reached the police, a team reached the village and tried to rescue them, they said.
Villagers opposed the policemen and started pelting stones at them. As the situation went beyond control, the policemen shot two rounds to disperse the crowd, they said.
One person was injured in the police action and the security forces later succeeded in securing the release of the thieves, they said.
