One killed, 28 injured as hailstorm hits Meghalaya

One person was killed, 28 others were injured and many houses damaged when a severe hailstorm hit several villages of West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya today, official sources said.

Hundreds of houses were damaged in- Mawlangniang, Mawsiej, Nongkhiniang and Mawsiangbah - villages in West Khasi Hills district as hailstorm accompanied by rains hit the villages in the wee hours today, the sources said.

The person killed in the storm was identified as 54-year-old Nanly Khardewsaw while out of the 28 people injured, four persons were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital, they said.

Meanwhile, relief materials such as relief grants, food and medical care had been disbursed to the affected families by the district administration.
 

Last month over 690 families were rendered homeless in Meghalaya's South West Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills districts when a severe cyclone and hailstorm hit several villages killing three persons.

Many houses were destroyed and bout 692 families from 24 villages were affected.
