One person was killed and six others were injured when a fire broke out in a passenger bus in China's restive Xinjiang province today.

About 20 passengers were on the bus when the fire occurred, said the bus driver, who was injured in the fire.

The six injured people were taken to local hospitals.

State-run Xinhua news agency blamed the 'fatal fire' on an ageing circuit.

"The bus was running and we heard a sudden sound. Suddenly, there was a big fire on the bus," an injured person told Xinhua.

"Dark smoke quickly filled the bus. I stopped the bus, tried but failed to close the natural gas valve," the bus driver said.

However, the fire has been extinguished and traffic order has been restored.

The city bus was plying on Guangming Road in Urumqi, provincial capital of Xinjiang, which in recent times witnessed riots and militant attacks.
