One killed in elephant attack

A 50-year-old banana grower was today trampled to death by a tusker in a farm near Gudalur, some 70 km from here, police said.

Murugesan noticed an elephant in his banana farm in Muruganpadi early this morning destroying full grown bananas and pelted stones to drive it away.

However, the elephant charged him and he fell down in a bid to escape following which the pachyderm trampled him to death.

On receiving information, his relatives and officials from the forest and police department rushed to the spot. The body was later taken to the Gudalur government Hospital.

In another incident, 33-year-old Gokulan, cleaner in a school bus, was attacked by an elephant at Malavancherampadi, some two km from Muruganpadi, as he was waiting for students to get into the vehicle, police said.
 

He was admitted to a government hospital here with injuries on his leg, they said.
