One killed in train robbery; cash, gold stolen

A courier company employee died today after he jumped off a train in a bid to chase two persons, who robbed his bag containing cash and jewellery worth Rs 75 lakh, railway police said.

The incident took place between Gothaj and Nadiad railway stations when Mumbai-bound Karnavati Express slowed down owing to some track work going on there.

Chagan Raval (60), a resident of Ahmedabad's Khokhra area who worked in a courier company in Manekchowk area of the city, boarded the Karnavati Express in the morning and was seated besides Manohar Singhi.

As the train slowed down between Gothaj and Nadiad railway stations, two persons on train tried to snatch Raval's bag from his possession, police said.
 

Raval resisted following which the duo snatched the bag from him and injured him by hitting the bag on his head, police said.

As the duo jumped off the slow moving train, Raval too leapt out to chase them and in the process was seriously injured.

Singhi informed railway police about the incident at the next station.

Raval succumbed to his injuries while he was being shifted to a hospital.

The deceased's son, Rajendra Raval, registered a complaint with Nadiad railway police.

"Two persons, in the age group of 20-25 years, were involved in the incident as per the description given by Singhi, who was seated next to Raval. We have initiated a manhunt to trace them," Nadiad railway police sub-inspector I V Patel, who is investigating the case, said.
