One-month pillion riding ban imposed in Karachi

Pakistani authorities today imposed a one-month ban on pillion riding in Karachi over the city's deteriorating law and order situation.

The ban by Sindh's provincial government come amidst an operation against criminal elements in the city, officials said.

Members of law enforcement agencies, journalists, women, children and the elderly will be exempted from the ban, they said.

Since the start of the year, there has been an increase in the number of targeted killings and bomb attacks in the city most of them aimed at security personnel.

Yesterday, at least 16 people were killed across the city in such attacks. Most of these attacks have been attributed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban.
 

The city's top cop Shahid Hayat said that special security measures were being put into place after 26 policemen have been killed in the first 25 days of the year.

He said over 500 retired army personnel had been inducted into the police force while 400 more would be included soon.
