One of the two black bucks rescued by firefighters, died today taking the death toll of deer and black bucks to five in the disaster-hit Odisha's Ganjam district, a forest official said.
Fire brigade personnel at Purusottampur, yesterday rescued two black bucks which were swept away in the flood water of river Rushikulya and handed over to forest officials, he said, adding, that one of them succumbed to injuries today.
"This black buck was a female and it was injured... It succumbed to injures while being treated," Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Berhampur S S Mishra said.
The other black buck, also a female, would be released into the jungle soon, he said, adding, that with today's death, the number of deer and black buck died in the disaster rose to five.
Earlier, three black bucks had died in the Berhampur University's deer park, when trees fell on them during the cyclone Phailin.
Similarly, an injured barking deer, which was rescued from Kanchana village, died during treatment, the DFO said.
Incidentally, forest officials have also rescued the 18 black bucks, which were stranded at Chikili when flood water gushed into their habitation.
"The animals could manage to take a safe place before their habitation was submerged in the flood water," the DFO said.
Forest officials were also learnt to have rescued an injured mugger which was coming out from the Ghodahada Reservoir near Digapahndi in the flood water.
