One more dies of sunstroke in Odisha, north India swelters too

The sunstroke toll in Odisha this summer mounted to four today with a person succumbing in Angul district, as hot temperatures prevailed across north India as well.

The national capital continued to reel under scorching heat as the mercury settled at 41.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 42 degrees Celsius tomorrow as well.

In Rajasthan, Barmer recorded the hottest temperature at 44.6 degrees Celsius followed by 43.9 in Kota, 43.2 each in Bikaner and Jodhpur, 43 each in Churu and Ganganagar and 42.5 each in Ajmer and Jaisalmer.

The maximum temperature in Punjab and Haryana hovered above normal levels at most places.
 

Chandigarh recorded a high of 40.5 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal, the Met department said.

In Punjab, Patiala had a hot day at 41.2 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal. Ludhiana too braved hot weather, at 41.6 degrees Celsius.

Hisar in Haryana was the hottest place at 42 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal, while Narnaul, witnessed a high of 41.8, up one degree.

The weather in Uttar Pradesh was generally dry with several places recording temperatures above normal level. The highest temperature was recorded in Banda at 45.6 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

Jhansi sweltered at 44.6, Allahabad recorded 43.8 and Etawah 43.6, all of them three notches above normal.

In Odisha, the searing heat intensified in most parts during the day with Balangir and Titlagarh becoming the hottest places at 43 degree Celsius each.

The mercury breached the 40-degree mark at at least 10 places. Today's death was the second due to heatstroke reported from Angul. Two people died earlier at Sonepur and Dhenkanal, the Special Relief Commissioner's office said.

Warm, dry weather prevailed in Bihar with mercury levels in Gaya soaring once again to touch 40.6 degrees Celsius, the Met office said.

According to the MeT department, the weather remained dry in the state during the day.

Rainfall occurred at many places over Lakshadweep, Coastal and South interior Karnataka, at a few places over North interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Rayalaseema, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Dry weather prevailed over Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
