One more woman, who was battling for life after developing complications during delivery at a government-run hospital here, died today despite being shifted to Coimbatore, taking the number of such deaths from the hill resort town since last week to five.

The death occurred on a day when Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijaya Bhaskar reviewed the situation at the Sait Memorial Hospital here, where the five women developed complications during delivery, and announced various infrastructure measures, including an Intensive Care Unit.

The woman was in a critical state after all vital organs started failing. She was shifted to the government medical college hospital in Coimbatore where she died this noon, hospital sources said.

Two women died at the Sait hospital on December 23 and 26 respectively during delivery following blood loss and contracted uterus, while two others died yesterday after being shifted to the Coimbatore hospital.

Bhaskar told reporters that Sait hospital will soon have an ICU unit and a lift at a cost of Rs 45 lakh. Two new ventilators will also be allotted to the hospital here and another in Coonoor.

He said government had also taken steps to appoint 1,727 MBBS doctors and 2,172 BDS doctors across the state next month.

On resumption of attending delivery cases in the Sait Hospital, which has been stopped since yesterday, the Minister said it might take another one week, since the doctors were little apprehensive following the five deaths, which led to protests by relatives earlier.
