An independent candidate has filed his nomination paper to contest bypoll from Patiala Assembly seat while no nomination paper has been filed from Talwandi Sabo seat.

Rajinder Singh Pawar has filed his nomination as an independent candidate from Patiala Assembly seat, Punjab Chief Electoral Officer V K Singh said here.

"No nomination has been filed as yet for the bypoll to Talwandi Sabo Assembly constituency," he said.

Bypolls to Talwandi Sabo and Patiala Assembly seats in Punjab will be held on August 21.

He further said candidates could file their nomination papers before the SDM-cum-Returning Officers concerned between 11 am to 3 pm till August 2.

He said that July 31, being a martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, is a holiday but not a holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, therefore nomination papers could be filed on that day.

Patiala Assembly seat was vacated by Amarinder Singh after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amritsar, defeating BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

Talwandi Sabo seat fell vacant after sitting Congress MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu deserted the party to join ruling Shiromani Akali Dal.
