The gun battle erupted in Bara Sheihan area of the city when the militants attacked a joint team of police and Frontier Constabulary personnel who were defusing a bomb.
Officials said some militants were also killed in the exchange of fire.
Additional forces were sent to the area to conduct a search operation.
