Senior Congress leader and Leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad today said only the Congress-DMK combine can provide a "stable, strong and efficient government in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry".

Talking to reporters here, Azad described the Puducherry government led by Rangasamy headed AINRC as "disastrous" and alleged that most of the welfare schemes implemented during the previous Congress regime here had been scrapped.

"Instead of taking care of the poor through welfare measures, the schemes had been wound up causing hardship to the beneficiaries," he said.

Azad stated that industries were also closing down fast.

No new industries have been set up and unemployment problem continued to be a menace to the youth in the Union Territory, he alleged.

He also charged the AINRC government with having 'messed up the special economic zone' sanctioned for Puducherry during the previous UPA regime while accusing the Narenda Modi led NDA government of reducing the allocation of funds to the Union Territory.

"The Chief Minister of Puducherry has not approached the Centre to seek allocations for various plans and programmes in Puducherry and the Prime Minister was also not showing interest towards the union territory."

Azad appealed to the voters here to ensure that the Congress-DMK combine was elected to power here so that all the welfare measures that were in existence in the past were revived for Puducherry.

AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik also hit out at both the Prime Minister and Rangasamy for "failing" to deliver on the promises made to the people of the union territory.
