Leader of Opposition in BJP-ruled NDMC Mukesh Goel today questioned the civic body for allowing a private company to launch its product related to tracking of mosquito infestation and said action should be taken against its Mayor for "misusing" his position.

"While the South Delhi Mayor adjourned the meeting of the house on the death of President of India's wife, on the other hand, the North Delhi Mayor was busy in promoting a private company's product," Leader of Opposition Mukesh Goel said.

On August 19, an app 'TrackTheBite' was launched at a function here by North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta.

"The event was fully private in which only mediapersons were invited to cover the promotional event of an anti-mosquito product," Goel alleged.

He said that permission for such alleged "commercial activity" in the corporation's headquarter "cannot be extended" but Mayor Gupta provided the space for commercial activity and "misused" his position for the purpose.

Gupta, denying the allegation, claimed that "we did not charge any money from the company and it was for a social cause, which we will continue to encourage."

"Even if anyone from the Opposition wants to organise such activities for social cause, we will let them use the facility. And, on top of that, the company is offering its product for free," he said.

Goel demanded that the action to be taken against Gupta, claiming, he according to the Delhi Municipal Act "misused his position and office for promoting commercial activities."

He also enquired from the Municipal Commissioner, under which rule permission to a private company was given to launch its product on the corporation's premises or in standing committee meeting hall, and also demanded action against those officers who allowed such practice in the office.

Goel said in this context a letter has also been written to the city's Lieutenant Governor.
