Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has issued orders to quarry owners to close all open pits in quarries within five days in the wake of the accidental deaths of five children yesterday.

Five children had died in two separate incidents at Mijar and Beluvai in Dakshina Kannada district, slipping into quarry pits.

The Deputy Commissioner has also directed all Grama Panchayats and Tahsildars in the district to ensure that the orders were adhered to.

All quarries in the district would remain closed for the next five days, an official statement said. The order also directed the villagers to inform Grama Panchayats in their region of any open quarry pits.
