Organs from brain dead man harvested

Vital organs were harvested from a 47-year-old man who was declared brain dead following a road accident, providing new lease of life to needy patients.

These include two kidneys, two eyes, liver and skin, which were rushed to various hospitals here as directed by Tamil Nadu Organ Sharing Network Registry for Transplantation, K G Hospital Chairman G Bhakthavataslam said.

G R Vijayakumar, working as manager of KG-Group owned textile mill, was riding a motorcycle and met with an accident with another two-wheeler in Annur on the outskirts yesterday morning, he said.

Vijayakumar was brought to the hospital, but was declared "brain dead" on failing to respond to the treatment.
 

The family of Vijayakumar, after counselling, agreed to donate the organs, which was conveyed to Tamil Nadu Cadaver Transplant Programme authorities and his organs were harvested.

One of the kidneys was allotted to KG Hospital, another to PSG Hospitals, the liver to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, the skin to Ganga Hospital and the eyes to Sankara Eye Hospital, he said.
