Organs of brain dead patient harvested

The family of Mathew P J (41) from Meppadi in Wayanad who was declared brain dead following an accident have set an example by donating his organs.

His organs will be donated to five other people, Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) hospital said in a release here today.

Mathew was declared brain dead at MIMS on February 19. His wife Jeshu Mary and his elder brother Joseph informed the hospital authorities about their willingness to donate his organs.

The liver, two kidneys and two eyes were harvested. One kidney was donated at MIMS to a 30-year-old woman from Payyoli and another kidney to a 53-year-old woman at Calicut Medical College. Liver was donated to a 36-year-old man at AIMS Kochi.Eyes were donated to two different patients at Comtrust eye Hospital, Calicut, the release said.
 

Mathew was working as a housekeeping staff at WIMS Medical College Hospital at Wayanad and suffered a serious injury to his brain after he fell down from a ladder, it said.
