: Cutting across party lines, Lok Sabha Member R Radhakrishnan of the ruling AINRC has come out with a detailed appreciation of contributions of outgoing RS member P Kannan of Congress for the development of Puducherry.

Kannan's six year term of office in the Upper House comes to an end tomorrow. He is an estranged Congress leader and has been keeping himself at a distance from all party programmes and functions for the last nearly four years.

He was elected to Rajya Sabha from lone seat here in 2009.

Radhakrishnan in a release said Kannan had made excellent contributions in several sectors making use of funds available under MP Local Area Development programme. Construction of toilets in girls educational institutions, setting up a blood transfusion facility in JIPMER,equipping the police department with ambulances, adopting a backward village and infrastructure development under MPLAD were highlights of his work, he said.

AIADMK nominee N Gokulakrishnan has been elected unopposed from the RS seat here to Upper House with the support of the ruling AINRC. He succeeds Kannan as the ninth member of Rajya Sabha from Puducherry.

This is the second time that AIADMK represents the Union Territory in the Upper House. V P M Samy had earlier been the AIADMK member in 1977.
