The Corporation officials today razed to the ground some 1,000 houses and huts constructed allegedly on an encroached land over a lake in the city.

Those occupying these tenements were given apartments in Ammankulam and several of them had moved to the new dwellings.

Despite this, a majority of them was returning again and again to occupy and stay in these houses, despite warning, an official release said today.

Armed with the orders from the administration, including District Collector, Corporation Commissioner and the Mayor, the officials razed to ground all the 1,000 houses to the ground, constructed in a 30 acre encroached land on the bank of Valankulam, the release said.

There was tight police security, when the demolition was taking place, with the help of earth removers, it said.
