Over 1.5 kg of gold seized from air passengeres in Kerala

In continuing anti-smuggling operations, Air Intelligence officials of the Customs today seized over 1.5 kg gold valued at Rs 53.21 lakhs in four separate cases at the airports here and Kozhikode.

While the Customs Air Intelligence officials at the International airport here seized gold totally weighing over 500 grams and valued at around Rs 16 lakh from three persons, their counterparts at Kozhikode International Airport seized 1.18 kg of gold from one passenger.

All the three seizures in Kochi were made from residents of Kozhikode, who arrived by a private airliner from Dubai, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said.

In all the three cases, the passengers had concealed rhodium-plated gold hooks in their hand bags which came to fore when Customs personnel intercepted them near the exit gate and searched them, a release said.
 

The total gold seized from Kochi was 526.40 grams valued at Rs 16.21 lakh, the release added.

In Kozhikode, based on a tip off, the Customs sleuths checked the baggage of a passenger and found 1,189 grams of gold in foil form kept concealed.

The market value of the gold seized from Kozhikode was Rs 37.21 lakh, Customs said.

With this, gold worth around Rs 86 lakh and totally weighing about 2.7 kg had been seized in the region by the customs in the past three days.

Undeclared gold totally weighing over one kg and valued at Rs 32.78 lakh was seized by Customs personnel from three Keralites who arrived at the airport from different countries on Saturday and Sunday.
