Over 1 lakh branded foreign cigarettes seized

Over one lakh branded foreign cigarettes valued at Rs 32.70 lakh were seized today by DRI sleuths from six passengers who arrived at Coimbatore from Sharjah, an official release said.

The passengers had arrived on an Air Arabia flight this morning and were nabbed by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials as they were trying to pass through the 'Green Channel' saying they had nothing to declare.

A total of 3.40 lakh cigarettes packed in 1,700 cartons valued at about Rs 32.70 lakh were seized from them, an official release said.

Necessary legal action under the Customs Act, 1962 for offences committed in smuggling of cigarettes has been contemplated and further investigation is on, it said.
