Over 1000 challaned for drunken driving in National Capital

Over 1000 people have been challaned for drunken driving in the national capital in the last three days.

"Delhi Traffic Police has launched special drive against drunken driving. 1,004 drunk drivers have been challaned and 432 vehicles impounded in last three days," Delhi Police said in a press release.

"1622 people have lost their lives in road accidents in Delhi last year (2015). The Delhi Traffic Police has been undertaking several education campaigns and special prosecution drives to inculcate a sense of discipline among road users," the release said.

It further said that special teams of Traffic Police are being stationed at important locations all over the city at strategic locations and timings.
 

In pursuant to the recommendations of the committee for road safety set up by Supreme Court, drunken driving is one of the five traffic offences which can amount to suspension of driver's licence for three months.
