Over 16,500 die of infectious diseases in China in 2013

A total of 16,592 patients died of infectious diseases, including AIDS, in China last year, the government said today.

More than 6.4 million infectious disease cases were reported on the Chinese mainland in 2013, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said in a statement.

Among the 3.1 million cases categorised as Class A and B infectious diseases, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

A total of 6.95 million infectious disease cases were reported in 2012 and 17,315 people died, it said.

Besides AIDS, foot-and-mouth disease, diarrhea and colds and respiratory infections were the most deadly.
