Over 160 pets were impounded from the VVIP areas of the capital in the past three years as they were on a banned list of New Delhi Municipal Council, the government said today.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran told the Lok Sabha that the NDMC has made a list of certain categories of animals that have been banned in NDMC areas.

However, he said, NDMC allows to keep pets like dogs as well as milching animals for domestic use as per conditions laid.

A total of 164 pets were impounded in the past three years. In 2012-13, 59 were impounded while the figure for 2011-12 was 37 and 2010-11 was 68.

"Sometimes, cows enter in NDMC areas and they are impounded immediately by field staff," he said.
