Over 2,000 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who had put out to sea in 490 mechanised boats, were chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy when they were allegedly fishing near Katchatheevu islet, a fishermen association leader claimed. The Lankan navy personnel, who came in 10 boats, also warned the fishermen not to poach fish near Katchatheevu and snapped the nets and fishing equipment of nearly 200 boats, Tamil Nadu Mechanised Boats Fishermen Association president P Sesuraja claimed here today. The fishermen, who ventured to the sea last night after a four-day strike, had to return empty-handed, he added. The fishermen also appealed to the government to take steps to prevent frequent attacks on them. On February 13, nearly 2,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel and warned against venturing near Katchatheevu islet.
