Of the 267 officers, 123 were probed during 2009, 41 in 2010, 70 in 2011 and 33 between January and July this year by the CBI for alleged graft, according to official data.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) are mandated to check tax and service evasions by individuals and firms among others. Agencies like Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax (IT) department, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs among others work under the Department of Revenue.

Besides, the Department of Revenue officials carried out raids and investigations against 67 of its own officers during the same period.

In all the cases, corruption complaints were first examined by the Central Vigilance Commission and then sent to the CBI for carrying out further probe.

Those who faced CBI and inter-departmental probe included Group A (IRS and IES officers), Group B (CSS service) and Group C (Clerical).

"The government is taking action in all the cases as per the recommendations of the CBI, and advice of the CVC and the decision of the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Department, as the case may be," an official said.

The names and designation of the officers who faced such investigations were not known. "The cases are being investigated by the probe agency and divulging further information at this stage may hamper the investigations," he said.

Sources said that most of the persons facing graft charges were working at sensitive posts.

The Department of Revenue is at the forefront of dealing with measures to check black money.
