Nearly 3.53 lakh farmers of drought-hit Yavatamal district of Maharashtra will receive benefits of total Rs 191 crore under different insurance schemes.

A total of Rs 191 crore, of which Rs 117 crore for National Agriculture Insurance scheme and Rs 74 crore for Weather-based scheme, have been sanctioned by insurance firms, district administration officials said.

A sum of Rs 191 crore has been received from the insurance companies for the two schemes and the fund would soon be credited to the bank accounts of farmers, district agriculture superintendent officer Dattatraya Gaikwad said yesterday.

Nearly 64,000 farmers in the district will be deprived of the insurance scheme benefits as they have not taken the insurance policy so far, he said.

Meanwhile, farmers' rights activist Kishore Tiwari has made a representation to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently to ask banks to expedite loan restructuring and rehabilitation procedures for farmers in 14 districts of Vidarbha and Marathwada, so that they would get the fresh crop loan before the beginning of the kharif season.
