Over 3,600 people died and more than 12,000 people sustained injuries in road accidents in Chhattisgarh in the past one year, Home Minister Ramsevak Paikra told the state assembly today.

"A total of 3,633 people were killed and 12,469 were injured in road incidents in 2013-14," Paikra said in a written reply to a question asked by Congress MLA Rajendra Kumar Rai.

The state government runs traffic awareness campaign by organising road safety weeks to make the people, including school and college students, aware about traffic and safety rules, he said.

Traffic indicators have been installed at accident-prone sites such as sharp bends in the roads and narrow bridges on national and state highways, it said.

Also, wearing helmet has been made mandatory for both rider and the pillion-rider, it said.
