More than 4,000 yoga enthusiasts today participated in a two-hour programme held at 50 centres across Singapore, to mark the first International Yoga Day.

The event was led by the High Commissioner Vijay Thakur Singh and Singapore's Minister in The Prime Minister's Office, Grace Fu to observe the Yoga day.

"We have an overwhelming response to the first International Yoga day in Singapore - people from diplomatic corps, business executives and Singaporeans from all walks of life participated," Singh told PTI after this morning session, the first of which was held at the sprawling High Commission of India complex followed by other centres.

Singapore has a large community of yoga enthusiasts, Grace noted, pointing out that Yoga was the 5th most popular exercise within the People's Association, which has grassroot centres across the island state and it support the High Commission of India in organising the event.

Welcoming yoga enthusiasts, Singh said Yoga is a daily part of life for a large number of Indians and non-Indians across the globe and he would encourage more people to practice yoga on a regular basis for it leads to a healthy life-style.
