Over 40,000 government officials, who will be on election duty on December 4, have cast their votes through postal ballots till today evening, an election commission official said.

Delhi's Chief Electoral office has also extended the date of casting votes through postal ballots to December 2.

"This year, we have a record voting by government officials through postal ballot as compared to 1,600 people in the 2008 Assembly elections. The postal ballot process will continue till December 2," said Ankur Garg, chief nodal officer at the Delhi election office.

Of the government officials, more than 25,220 civil defence personnel and 6,070 policemen have cast their votes since November 24 when the postal ballot process began.

Citing the reasons of extension, Garg said 73,000 postal ballots had been issued and that they wanted to provide more time and opportunity to the government officials to vote in the elections.

"The entire proceedings have been videographed," said Garg.
