Close on the heels of the hooch tragedy that claimed 41 lives in Lucknow and Unnao, more than 700 litres of illicit liquor has been seized from various parts of the district with the police arresting 43 persons in this connection.
"In the aftermath of the hooch tragedy that struck Unnao and Lucknow, a direction was received from the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police to the district police chief here for constituting a team to crack down on illicit liquor trade," police spokesman Mrityunjay Mishra said.
"Accordingly, a special drive was conducted which led to the seizure of 707 litres of liquor in the last 24 hours.

"Among the arrested persons, 24 were nabbed from various police station areas falling in the city which led to recovery of 435 litres," he said.
From the trans-Yamuna region, the arrests of 14 persons led to recovery of 202 litres while another 70 litres were recovered and five persons arrested in the trans-Ganga region, Mishra said.
Cases have been registered against the arrested accused under the Excise Act, he added.
