Claiming the strike to be totally successful, the Bihar Bar Council (BBC) president Baleshwar Prasad Sharma said that over one lakh lawyers in Bihar abstained from judicial work to protest against the centre's proposed Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011 that seeks to take away the right of the BCA to grant recognition to law colleges and related institutions.
The lawyers also protested on the streets and set on fire the copies of the proposed legislation, he said.
Sharma said that he himself led the lawyers in staging demonstration at the busy Dak Bunglow roundabout and burnt the copies of the proposed Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011.
The lawyers also burnt copies of the National Law University Bill, proposal to allow foreign law firms to set up their offices in India and to set up ombudsman to monitor Legal Education Accreditation and Conduct of the advocates, he said.
