Over Rs 8 lakh cr tax revenue locked up in appeals

Over Rs 8 lakh crore tax revenue was locked up in appeals before various courts and authorities at the end of last fiscal, government said today.

As on March 31, 2016, over 3 lakh cases were pending before the Commissioner of Income-Tax (Appeals), Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), High Courts and Supreme Court, Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

"As on March 31, 2016, an amount of Rs 8,20,741 crore was locked in appeal before the CIT (A)/ITAT/HC/SC," he said, adding that the total number of cases were 3,29,269.
 

In 2014-15, he added, tax revenue of Rs 5,71,668 crore was locked in appeals.

As for the current fiscal, 2016-17, the figures were available as on May 31. According to the data provided, over 2.91 lakh cases were pending before CIT (A) alone, amounting to nearly Rs 6.62 lakh crore.
