Over two tonnes of cannabis seized, 7 held

More than two tonnes of cannabis valued at around Rs one crore was seized from seven persons at Balimela area of Odisha's Malkangiri district, police said today.

All the seven persons were arrested for possessing the contraband.

A police patrolling team spotted a group of people carrying the consignment packed in sacks on the state highway near Govindpalli yesterday evening.

As the police team advanced towards the group, some of them ran away leaving their sacks behind, while seven persons were caught and the ganja seized, sub-divisional police officer P R Rahul said.

The consignment was being sent to different places in Chhattisgarh via Nabarangpur, he said, adding the seized cannabis weighing two tonnes and 300 grams was valued at around Rs one crore.
