Kerala Fisheries Minister K Babu said unscientific and overfishing has led to decline in marine fisheries resources in the state.

"The fishermen should keep away from the overexploitation of the fishery resources. It is leading to the depletion of commercially important fish species", he said inaugurating the World Fisheries Day celebration at Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS).

"Climate change and global warming were also leading to the deterioration of the sector," he said.

Earlier a seminar on Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK) of fishermen highlighted that an experienced traditional fisher can predict presence of fish by observing the constellation and concentration of stars.

A group of traditional fishermen in the state shared their ITK with the fishery scientists, teachers and students at the seminar organised by KUFOS.
