A 21-year old woman died allegedly after being run over by an overspeeding SUV here today and the ghastly incident was captured on the CCTV camera that lead to the driver's arrest, police said.

The woman carrying her four-year old child was walking on the left side of a road when the SUV hit her from behind. She died on the spot after being thrown several feets away off the road in the incident that occurred early morning on June 8.

The baby with severe injuries is being treated in a hospital, police said.

Video footage of the ghastly incident captured by CCTV cameras installed by police on Gandhi Road was released to the media by police today.

It showed the break neck speed in which the black colour SUV was driven and how the helpless woman was flung into the air and thrown off the road alongwith her child despite walking on the road side.

The victim was identified as Selvi, a local resident, and she was walking on the road alongwith another woman with her child in arms.

The video also shows how the other woman was shell shocked seeing the accident and how she ran towards her to save her and the child.

Police told PTI that the driver of the SUV, Vinoth Kannan of Ramanathapuram, surrendered before police today and was arrested. A case has been registered against him. However, they declined to provide further details.
