Leader of opposition in Vidhan Sabha P K Dhumal welcomed Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari's announcement sanctioning 17 National Highways and said it would go a long way in improving road connectivity in the state.

"Himachal has been given numerous projects since Modi government came to power at the centre. Sanction of 17 National Highways at an estimated cost of Rs 25,000 crore was a major support to the state where roads are considered as lifelines of the people," Dhumal said.

He said Rs 500 crore was also been sanctioned for the construction of over-bridges.

Earlier, funds for several projects, including AIIMS, IIM, medical colleges and railway network expansion had already been sanctioned.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 600 crore for three medical colleges and Rs 450 crore for expansion of railway network while the share of states in central taxes had been increased from 32 to 42 per cent.
