A member of Pakistan's minority Ahmadi community was shot and killed in an apparent hate crime in Punjab province.

Four armed men came to the medical store of Ikramullah in Tunsa, some 350 kilometres from here, yesterday and fired at him, killing him on the spot and later fled on motorcycles, according to the FIR.

The wife of the victim told police that the family had no enmity with anyone.

"The incident seems to be faith driven," she said.

Spokesman of Jamaat Ahmadiyya Pakistan, Saleemuddin strongly condemned the incident saying the seditious propaganda against Ahmadis all over the country is a primary reason of such incidents.

He said that it was announced in the National Action Plan that effective action will be taken against all persons who spread hatred.

"But it is sad to say that all seditious elements are spreading hatred against Ahmadi community with impunity," he said and demanded the arrest of the killers of Ikramullah.

Pakistan's Ahmadis consider themselves Muslim but often face persecution. They were declared non-Muslims through a constitutional amendment in 1974. A decade later, they were barred from proselytising or identifying themselves as Muslims.

Some 1.5 million Ahmadis live across the country.
