At least 13 militants were killed when air force jets pounded their positions in the troubled North Waziristan tribal region, the Pakistani military said today.

The military launched a much-awaited offensive in the region on June 15 to destroy safe havens of local and foreign militants.

Military spokesman Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a statement that fighters jets of Pakistan Air Force targeted militant positions in Mirali area.

He said "13 terrorists" were killed and their five hideouts were destroyed in the attack.

Separately, 12 terrorists surrendered to security forces in North Waziristan.

Operation Zarb-e-Azb has displaced more than 450,000 people from the district who fled the conflict zone.

North Waziristan is considered as the last bastion of militants who have killed over 50,000 people in more than a decade of fighting in Pakistan.

The Pakistan government is struggling to deal with the mass exodus as displaced people complained of lack of food and other facilities.
