Pakistan today condemned the killing of its diplomat in Afghanistan and summoned the Afghan Charge d'affaires to protest the murder.
Nayar Iqbal Rana, an employee at the Pakistani consulate general in Jalalabad city of Nangarhar province, was gunned down by unidentified men this evening as he returned after prayers at a mosque.
Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said on Twitter "Pakistan condemns the killing of its diplomatic staff in Jalalabad" and demands increased security for the rest of staff.
He said Pakistan also lodged formal protest over the killing of the diplomat.
"Afghan charge d'affaires summoned by the foreign secretary to protest the gruesome murder of Pakistani diplomatic official in Jalalabad," he tweeted.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack and Afghan officials were still clueless about the motive of the murder, according to Pakistani officials.
The incident occurred after two officials of the Pakistani consulate went missing in July as they were returning to Pakistan by road but were rescued later.
The killing took place as Pakistani officials are trying to recover an Afghan politician who went missing in Peshawar last month.
Muhammad Nabi Ahmadi, deputy governor of Afghanistan's Kunar province, was visiting Peshawar for medical treatment.
