A Pakistani doctor, who helped the CIA track slain al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, has sought better conditions and security in prison, his lawyer said today.
In a letter, Shakeel Afridi also called for access to his lawyer Samiullah Afridi.
Samiullah said he found the letter placed on the table on his office. It was not known how the doctor, who is lodged in a jail here, was able to send the letter.
Shakeel Afridi was arrested and prosecuted in a treason case after US troops killed Laden in Abbottabad town in May 2011.
He was initially sentenced to 33 years in jail and given a fine, but a court here overturned his sentence in August and ordered a retrial.
A murder case has now been registered against him after a woman complained that he had caused her son's death in a botched operation.
In his letter, the doctor claims that being a BPS-19 officer he should be kept in a Class-B cell, however, he has been kept in inappropriate places inside the Peshawar Central Prison.
The letter stated that in the last meeting with the FATA Tribunal, he handed over a list of some belongings the police had confiscated when he was arrested which are yet to be returned.
"The police took away precious belongings during the arrest which have not been returned so far, and a list of the belongings was given to the tribunal in the last meeting. There is a need to carve out a legal way to get the belongings returned," the letter read.
