Suspected Pakistani hackers managed to breach the websites of Government Law College (GLC) in Mumbai and a private college in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
In Mumbai, the GLC authorities lodged a complaint at the Marine Lines police station after hackers put up a message on the college website, saying "To all Indians out there...Surgical strike...Lolx...", apparently referring to the army's recent surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Some students noticed it last evening and alerted the authorities. "We are investigating the IP address from which the website was defaced," said an officer of the Cyber Crime Cell of Mumbai police.

In a similar case of cyber-attack, suspected Pakistani hackers, who identified themselves as 'Death Adders Crew', hacked the website of Gandhinagar-based LDRP Institute of Technology and Research (LDRP-ITR).
They posted a photograph of Pakistan's flag and the slogan, 'Pakistan Zindabad', on the homepage of the institute, www.Ldrp.Ac.In.
The hackers also warned of more attacks, saying "Abhi toh party shuru hui hai" (the party has just started), borrowing a line from a popular Hindi film song.
The college authorities noticed the incident last night. LDRP-ITR is under Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya (KSV), a private university.
"We immediately deactivated the website. Only the homepage was hacked, while the data on the server is safe. Our technical team will put the website back online in due course after carrying out the required maintenance," said Registrar of the university SK Mantrala.
No police complaint had been lodged so far, he said.
