At least 15 militants were killed when fighter jets pounded their positions in Pakistan's restive northwestern tribal region, the army said today.

The targeted attacks were launched last night near Datta Khel area of North Waziristan tribal district.

The army said in a statement that "in precision aerial strikes 15 militants including some foreigners were killed".

The toll could not be verified through independent sources as the area is out of bounds for the media.

Pakistan launched a military operation against militants in North Waziristan last year and so far the army has killed more than 1,500 militants but the insurgents are still present in remote border regions near Afghanistan, forcing the army to launch strikes.

The latest strikes came after militants attacked a bus carrying minority Shia Ismailis in Karachi, killing 45 of them on Wednesday.
