A major terrorist attack in Pakistan apparently aimed at a police training centre here was foiled when a 50-kilogram bomb was defused.

A bomb disposal squad (BDS) official said that after repeated efforts experts defused the bomb as it had a "death wire" which is usually only installed by experts in bomb making.

"The bomb was found close to the VIP entrance gate of the Police Training Centre in Baldia Town on Saturday night and the building appeared to be the target," Ifthikar Solangi said.

The station house officer of Baldia Town, Ayazuddin confirmed that the bomb was concealed in a concrete drum planted near the gate.

"The plan was to detonate the bomb during VIP movement," he added.

"If it had exploded, the bomb would have badly damaged the training centre and killed many," he said.

At least 13 police commandos were killed and dozens injured when a powerful bomb blast exploded inside a bus outside a police training centre near Karachi in February.
