At least 47 police officials in Pakistan's Karachi city have been found involved in criminal activities including extortion and kidnapping for ransom, according to a report.
The report was submitted in Supreme Court by a senior police official Aamir Farooqi along with a separate report presented by paramilitary Rangers which demanded the "depoliticising" of police.
While the first report stated 47 police officials were found involved in cases of extortion and short-term kidnapping for ransom incidents, the Rangers report said that police along with the provincial government had tried to create hurdles in clean-up operation carried out in Karachi since September 2013.
Expressing concern over the performance of the police, Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali said was a serious matter that some police officials themselves were involved in criminal activities.
The Rangers in their report asked the court to allow them to set-up their own stations and grant them policing powers to file FIRs and case challans independently, a demand opposed by the Karachi police.
They claim that since they started the operation the crime rate and other incidents of target killings and extortion had come down in Karachi.
Political analysts fear that the clear discord between the Rangers and Police might worsen the security situation in Karachi, the commercial hub of the country.
