Armed men forced the closure of main markets, shopping centres and petrol pumps in many parts of the city soon after the Supreme Court verdict was announced in the contempt case against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani.
"Armed men came and resorted to aerial firing and warned us to close our shops immediately," Razzaq, a worker at a jewellery shop in the bustling Saddar area, said after shops started to close down in the afternoon.
Staff at a Petrol Pump in the clifton area also said they had temporarily shut down due to threats.
Police officials said there was also some tension in the city due to the killing of a PPP worker who was a member of the Sindh Council.
"Malik Mohammed Khan was killed by unidentified men and five others were injured in different areas of the city," a police official said.
In some areas armed men also burnt tyres and set up road blocks to protest the court's verdict.
